Probe Engineering Electronic Ignition from Cincycycles

While at the 2005 AMA Vintage Motorcycle days I had an
opportunity to talk with Jim Zemanek of Cincycycles about the new Probe
Engineering electronic ignition they are offering for the CBX. In theory the kit is similar to the
Dyna S electronic ignition but it has a couple of key advantages over the Dyna
unit in that the stock mechanical advancer and pickup coils are eliminated
resulting in a much cleaner advance curve and a few extra ponies on the top end.
The kit is high quality and very well designed with some
nice details like the wires running from the ignition cover being steel braid
jacketed for some added bling and the ignition cover is properly sealed from the
elements unlike the Dyna S. The control unit is about the size of a cigarette
pack and very thin making it easy to hide up around the battery box. Although
not fully programmable the advance can be adjusted up or down the scale to
accommodate tuning. This was a design trade off to keep the price of the kit
within reach of the average CBXer since 95% of us wont need that level of
programmability anyway and the existing advance curve was carefully worked out
on the dyno. You are good to go right out of the box. How does it look on the dyno? See for yourself.
88 peak HP on a stock 82 CBX with no other modifications. More impressive than
the overall horsepower output is how linear the power curve is at the top end.
Not too shabby! If I was shopping for an upgrade to the stock CBX Ignition I
would give the Cincycycles offering some serious consideration.
The
interesting question of the day was what about turbo CBX owners
that need to limit our total advance in order to keep our engines from turning
into grenades under boost? Lets face it right now the options are pretty ugly.
You either modify the mechanical advancer to limit the total advance or you
severely retard the timing. Either way you go they are less than perfect
solutions.
Not a problem! If enough of us turbo
CBX owners can get together and agree on an advance curve that would work for us
and give a solid commitment that we are seriously interested by pre-ordering
enough units to make it worth it. Jim can have the manufacturer reprogram it to
anything we want. Cool huh?
How much do you have invested in your turbo bike? $399.00
is a drop in the bucket when you think about it. No it’s not a power commander
but it’s a heck of a lot better than anything we have available to us now.
